Automated mass bill printing for a telecommunications provider

Billing runs are unforgiving. Every bill has to be right, every cycle, at volume. Booolean built an automated mass bill-printing solution for a telecommunications provider that orchestrates generation, composition and print-ready output as one batch, replacing manual runs and the errors that came with them.

The challenge

Each billing cycle, the provider had to turn billing data for its customer base into printed bills. The process involved several manual steps: extracting the cycle's data, running composition, checking output, handing files to the print stream and dealing with whatever had gone wrong. It consumed skilled people's time at exactly the moment the business could least afford mistakes, and every manual step was a place for one to happen.

What Booolean built

A batch orchestration engine. The whole cycle, from data extraction through composition to the print-ready output, runs as one automated, monitored batch with clear checkpoints and restart points.

Rule-driven composition. Bill content, layout variants, inserts and messaging are assembled by rule from the billing data, so a change to the bill is a change to configuration rather than a change to code.

Validation before output. Totals, counts and format checks run before anything reaches the print stream, with exceptions routed for review rather than halting the run.

Operational visibility. Run status, throughput and exceptions are visible to the billing team while the batch is in progress.

How we worked

We mapped the existing cycle step by step with the people who ran it, including the checks they did by eye. Those checks became automated validations. The new batch ran in parallel with the manual process for several cycles, with the outputs reconciled, before it took over.

The outcome

A billing cycle that runs on schedule without a room full of people watching it, output the print stream can accept first time, and a billing team freed to handle exceptions instead of routine. It is a good example of the kind of high-volume, rule-heavy processing that Booolean is built for.
